A Lancashire saying, "Its all Me, I and Peggy Martin", was used to refer to someone showing off or exaggerating the truth. What are its origins?

Marilyn Monroe plays a woman called Peggy Martin in Ladies of the Chorus, a film made by Columbia in 1948. This was her first proper big role, in after Monroe had been dropped by 20th Century Fox. I don't know if it's the same one!

Surely the correct phrase is "All my eye and Betty Martin".  And the phrase is certainly earlier than Marilyn Monroe.  I remember reading an Agatha Christie short story in which the phrase was crucial to the plot.  I hadn't heard the phrase before, but once I started to look out for it, I realised it was quite common.

sorry no definate answer to how the saying came into being, but I do know that Marilyn Monroe s character was based on a windmill girl who s name was Peggy Martin, that would have been in the 1940s/50s so probably post dates the sayings origins

My Mum was Peggy Martin, the Windmill Girl who Marilyn Monroe played in the film "Ladies of the Chorus"! She started at the theatre in 1942 and was dancing there until 1950, she is 86 years old now.
