How to Roast Chestnuts

Can somebody tell me how to roast them?? I know that I have to cut a cross in them but I always find that when I do them in the oven at 200 degress for 20 minutes they are so hard to peel. Help!!

Silly question time, is your oven gas or electric? I presume electric with the 220 degrees.

Chestnuts seem much smaller than years ago, I used to just give them a deep single slice and once tried a small bowl of water at the bottom of the oven to get some moisture going.
God I love roast chestnuts, I eat tons and then end up with terrible indigestion!

I make a cut on either side and then bung in a hot oven until they have begun to open up, at least 30 mins maybe more.

If you have one of those perforated pizza trays use that, otherwise a baking tray is fine.

I'm going to to give the video one a try and I'll let you know how it turns out.....probably will be tomorrow so watch this space and thank you all.

Thanks, it shows what I spend a lot of time doing but minus the grey hair...
I’m not allowed chestnut as they make me f@rt and Mrs. Dp plays hell with me

I have just tried out dustypuss's video on the chestnuts and it worked a treat. I didn't feel safe using the bread knife as the video man did but used a curved parring knife. They were also so easy to peel after, so thank you dustypuss.
