Want a cheap stocking filler for young kids?

Was just about to throw out some marmalade glass jars with metal lids when I realised they could be turned into some cheap stocking fillers for kids. I've just been to the garden centre where Thompson & Morgan have a wonderful new range of colourful edible sprouting seed packets @ �1.99 each.
So I'm cleaning up the jars which can be used for growing the sprouting seeds in and popping in a packet of sprouting seeds in each one. As they only take 2 - 3 days to start germinating and all the instructions are on the seed packet, hopefully the kids will have something different to keep them stimulated over Christmas.

What are sprouting seeds?

Sprouting seeds are small kinds of edible salad-type vegetable seeds. The white Chinese bean sprouts which are often sold in supermarkets and with which you are probably familiar are just one of these varieties. Others are thinner and come in various shades of green or red. The end result, after germinating, are lots of little miniature beansprouts which can be sprinkled over salads or put in sandwiches and depending on the variety, they have a gentle radish, or onion type flavour.. If you grew mustand and cress as a child, they look similar to this, except they will germinate in a jam jar with a little moisture in, rather than having to be sown on a layer of muslin or similar type material in a shallow tray.

i think that is a lovely idea. we never got half the things in our stockings as the kids get today. we got sweets, small toys and tangerine !! today they get pc games, dvds, cds etc. it costs a fortune to fill a stocking. bring back the 'traditional' stocking anyday !!
