Here in Brighton, “Queen’s Day” is used by some as an alternative to the formally named “Gay Pride Parade Day”. In Holland, it is something quite different. Started in 1885, it is a national holiday to mark the official birthday of the Queen. It is noted for its ‘freemarket’. Everybody is allowed to sell and/or buy things anywhere. Just imagine, evsajo – a nationwide car boot sale! It’s probably not a good idea to get separated from any companions on this day as absolutely ‘everyone’ wears orange!
Returning to yesterday’s event, I hear you asking me if I had a good time. Well, in spite of my recent ennoblement, I have to declare that I did not receive an invitation! I had got my hopes up when crofter dubbed me “Count”. To be honest, I am a bit miffed and I am thinking of emulating “The Beatles” and returning my honour. “What did you do instead, Count? Did you watch it on TV?” I hear you ask. No, I did not. I spent the whole day playing ‘Republican’ Croquet. I didn’t win, but I enjoyed the meritocracy.
