Salt And Pepper....

....why is salt and pepper called 'seasoning' when all other is either a herb or a spice. Anyone have any thoughts

Nothing Springs to mind, Summer in daily use and others Fall by the wayside.

Seasoning is done progressively so as not to overdo the salt or pepper where herbs are generally in whatever's cooking from beginning to end.

Not an expert but that rings true for me. One seasons one thing with something else: whatever you use is "seasoning". Commonly salt and/or pepper but not necessarily so. Herbs/spices are defined food types.
