How does christmas of today compare with your childhood christmas??

When I was a young girl, my Mum made the christmas cake, mince pies and sausage rolls. The house used to smell lovely of all this baking.
We used to go carol singing and in the run up to christmas, it was a treat on a Sunday afternoon to go to the West End and see the lights.
Now me, I cannot bake to save my life and as for the thought of going carol singing. well!
But it is not the same and I feel lucky for having that nostalgic memory.

It doesn�t my brother still beats me down the stairs :-) No it has changed a lot I�m usually hungover get up a lot later, can get to sleep the night before or early hours when I eventually roll in. I live on my own now so I get up open all presents of my mates then go over to mums later for lunch. I miss my nan being there and playing with all my toys after dinner :-) oh and me and my lil sis trying on our new pajamas and giving everyone a twirl :-) And you're right it doesnt have that same feeling I used to have a glow but that might have been the wine at 10yrs old :-)

I used to love xmas, having 3 younger brothers and sisters kept it special right up until my teens. It was never nice to be woken by my 16 year old brother at 5am because 'santa's been' and i was suffering from a hangover having been out at pub til 2am. I kid you not, he was up before my little sisters!

Then when i got my own place xmas was quieter and subdued.

Now little CRX is getting to the age where father christmas is a magical man who brings presents i can see its going to be great again for a good few years.

i dont bake but can cook a good xmas dinner, i used to make rum truffles to add to peoples gifts but have never been one for church services. I much prefer to cosy up in the warmth and watch feel-good xmas films.

our dads an old miseryguts in the run up to xmas, so this year Ive bought him a string of lights that spells out 'bah humbug' to decorate his office

I have very fond memories of christmas as a child , there were 8 of us plus Grandma shipped in for the day . The house would be cosy warm due to the oven being on constantly and both open fires well lit . The excitement of throwing our Santa letters up the chimney, and then creeping downstairs in the dark in the morning to see if Santa had been . Church at 10am and then back to nibble until xmas dinner at 3 accompanied by the Queens speech.
What a lovely time it was , we were not well off but at that time of year the house had plenty of food and we could eat til our stomaches ached , my parents worked and saved to make sure of it. We all had a main box of pressies each and a sock stocking which had little pressies in plus always a bag of nuts and a piece of fruit . We each had an annual book and a selection box too. .........I better stop typing now before I send you to sleep.....:-D xxx

he's not that bad redcrx. I'm suprised rev hasnt asked us who got the bigger piece of coal in our stockings. Although mum did put together a traditional stocking for my brother one xmas, he got an orange, a piece of coal and a cracker made from a toilet roll and tissue paper and my mum cut her toenails and put them inside. :-)

I no longer have a mouldy tangerine at the bottom of my stocking (actually it was a pillowcase).

Hey Funnygirl,

I think Christmas was much more fun when I was younger because I didn't have to organise it or spend hours down the shops trying to get a good pressie for everyone!

Now my children have left home there is not a lot of Christmas spirit in our house!

I love spending time with the grandchildren and watching them open their pressies.

pippa, we used pillowcases too. I suppose they were bigger than stockings.

I was very fortunate to have a wonderful childhood, and I try to keep Christmas as a "traditional" one for my own children. We have two big open fires, so we roast chestnuts in the embers, and the kids still put a little prezzie out for Mr. Claus and Rudolph! We hang stockings up when the kids are asleep - full of little cheap items, but individually wrapped up so well that they take ages to open!! Dinner's also with us all round the table. We pull crackers, and laugh at the silly jokes inside. Dad even wears the daft paper hats - but it's fun. I could go on and on about this, but I want my children to look back on Christmas as a happy, magical time.

There are no comparisons. The celebration and festivities of the Christmas season then were much better in every way. Thank God my memories are still working, I can reminisce.
