Because the rich use to box up their xmas left overs and give it to the poor.
Boxing Day is so called because it was the day when the 'poor boxes' in churches were opened and the money distributed to the needy.
Yep the servants got a box to take home to their families from the great house.

Its actually called St Stephen's day.
Still called St Stephens Day on Isle Of Man. We have a dance and song that we do around the streets for charity on that morn and end up in pub to thaw out. We had about 90 people at our local Hunt The Wren last year . ( Thats the name of the tradition>)
