I believe you have to audition to go on a quiz show.

If this is true, why are there so many people on them who know nothing. Are they chosen for the viewing public to think "I can do better"

Not talking Mastermind here. More, In it to win it, Perfection etc.

There seems to be a lot of contestants who know nothing, unless it's celebs or fashion.

Or maybe they are chosen so the TV company don't have to pay out the prize fund.

Maybe there not enough 'clever' people around any more.
It's probably so it varies. You never know what question might come up.
I thought so too micmak, I watched Perfection last week and one of the contestants seemed to be a complete dunce. Whether it was because she was on TV and lost her cool I don't know but I wondered how she got on the show. I don't like The Chase it's not often the contestants win, I don't think that is a fair game.
I think being photogenic might count for as much as your general knowledge on some quiz shows.
I think that personality counts. Most people on quiz shows are confident and chatty.

I watched the new show which started last Monday in place of Perfection.I liked it.
I used to love Pointless but have become bored with it as the subjects are not very interesting. Countdown is not as good now, as Nick is irritating and doesn't seem to relate well to the contestants.
Well that`s me out sandyRoe. I think I`m fairly passable but look like Margaret Rutherford in photographs. Hope the camera lies sometimes. Do they choose the odd dunce for viewer amusement micmak?
Me too, Gness. While I'm a fount of useless general knowledge, I'm unfortunately blessed with a face made for radio.

gness. It's hardly the odd dunce.
Did you watch The Chase tonight? The bloke got 11k in the quick round. Then got caught. It just happened that subjects he didn't know about were asked.
sandyRoe. Just as well we`ve never had children together then.

micmak. Must admit I don`t watch that many quiz shows now so I wouldn`t know. I am a bit of a Countdown addict though and that has gone downhill.
Many decades ago a mate of mine won on The Sale of the Century, despite getting the 2 religious questions wrong.

She was a vicar's daughter.

Needless to say we didn't miss an opportunity to remind her of that ;)
Bring back 15 to 1

No gimmicks, no pontificating. Just rapid fire, general knowledge questions.
Totally agree 15-1, fab!!
Gness, I suspect we'd make an almost perfect team for the Round Britain Quiz on radio 4
Agree. 15-2-1 was a great quiz show.
I`d forgotten 15-1 ttfn. Now that I would watch. Do you remember it micmak?

I also loved 15-1. Are ena, mamya and I of the same age?
> Totally agree 15-1, fab!!

I agree, though WGS could be a bit of a nob at times.

WGS - Which world-famous boxer was born Cassius Clay?
Contestant - Ali.
WGS - I need his full name.
