How do you keep fake fur trim from looking like a six week dead skunk?

I have a very expensive Joe Browns cardigan with fur trim and it looks terrible now. It was so soft and smooth when new?

Can I brush it with something?

it's not the same at ll, but i wonder if a spray with lrnor and water would work? I use it on my dughter's dollys hair which goes vile quite quickly
My grandmother, an accomplished tailor and cutter, used to clean fur with dry silver sand, but I can't remember the process. I think it may have been rubbed into the fur and then brushed out.
