Old Fashion Butcher’s Skewers
11 Answers
Might anyone know of another line of enquiry I might pursue to obtain some of these useful and much loved items. My Mum had dozens of them when I was a kid during WW11, but, sadly all traces have long since disappeared. They were only about 6” long but were mainly used to pin fresh meat into joints so didn’t need to be 24” long like the only ones that seem to be available today. Historically, because they were short, they could be stored in a regular cutlery draw or, because of the circular loop on the end, could be hung in small bunches on any convenient hook. Indeed, dad used to use them for all manner of DIY jobs; we even used them when camping in the summer hols to secure tent flaps and hold other things down: their easy stow dimensions being an important feature. They didn’t rust - another plus - and could be used to pin down the ground sheet on a picnic outing. Why on earth did they stop making them. I’m big on DIY and use metal pins for all sorts of outdoor jobs in the garden, but over time they rust and have to be either cleaned up or discarded and replaced. The old butcher’s skewers did not rust and likely, would last forever.

You might find something similar there, for use as plant supports, etc. For example, just a short drive away from me here in Suffolk, I can buy these: https:/ /tinyur l.com/7 ynyn4py
