National School Uniform
A well-known petition site has invited my signature supporting a national school uniform. While I do have some sympathy with the aims, it all seems a wee bit 1984 to me, so I won't be obliging.
What do you all think ?

Footnote: the petitioner's rationale reads as follows.
It is time for a national school uniform!
Many UK families struggle to afford school uniforms.
Especially, those already in poverty. Also, for those in circumstances such as homelessness who are moved into new catchment areas or those being forced to relocate due to domestic abuse.
Some academies are now businesses interested in profit first. High cost branded uniform items persist despite Government guidance last year. The media is filling again with stories of schools ramping up branded items and costs from their suppliers.
It is time to have a simple black or blue uniform code for all with maybe a branded tie or badge to distinguish schools.
As the Chair of a charity, The Faraway Children’s Charity, I have spent over 15 years helping to fund school uniforms, shoes and coats for families who need support.
A common sense uniform code is needed now to make life and finances easier for all. A code that is transferable across geographic areas and ensures grown-ups have a choice over how much they spend on items and where they can afford to buy them from.
