How do I seal a gap around the top of the cooker hood chimney

I had a chimney style cooker hood fitted a few days ago and the chimney part goes up to the ceiling. However ,because my ceiling is not level and is 'out' the top of the chimney does not sit flush with the ceiling all the way round, there is a small gap of about 5mm most of the way round. The fitter put a bit of decorators caulk around it and said that it would need building up a bit in a few days when it had dried but the gap was too big to put too much caulk on it in one go. As it has dried it has shrunk, so it really hasnt filled hardly any of the gap. Has anyone got a suggestion of how to fill the gap without using sealant. It is also stainless steel by the way, so there will be some vigorous rubbing and polishing going on.

That's the stuff to use .. or any acrylic sealer.
If you use silicone, you will not be able to paint it properly.
Cut the nozzle on the gun at 45deg. and use with an angled smooth action, preferably without stopping and starting! Wipe off excess with wet cloth.

Any chance of raising the hood Osters .............. so that it can be let in to the ceiling ............... make it more stable too

No chance of raising the hood into the ceiling. I'm really disappointed, Ive had a new fitted kitchen and its dragged on and on and some of the finishing has been very poor ( like the cooker hood ). I feel like I'm settling for a second rate finish just because I'm fed up with having them here every day and just want my life and home back to normal. I'm wondering whether a bit of quadrant wooden moulding ( painted white) will work to fill the gap.

Sorry to hear all that Oster ............. use white uPVC quad ............. glue it on .......... ........... no painting!

So you have a hood and a suggestion was letting it into the ceiling .. ?
By cutting through plasterboard (probably) and leaving unsupportededges to seal to the hood? Right.
Another suggestion .. Apply white UPVC quadrant to a Stainless hood? What do you think that will look like then? Like a dodgy builder's been in.
You could ask if the manufacturer does a trim piece to fit, failing that, use some timber moulding grip-filled (I suppose) in place and painted to match ceiling. Won't show, then.

thanks guys for your help. I have actually found in the shed a piece of quadrant moulding that i think will do the job. I think they should do it though, I am useless at cutting mitred corners, although saying that I have lost confidence in their abilities, but I guess I have to give them a chnace to put things right. xx
