does he have a garden or a tree within view of his window - just thinking a bird house or bird feeder? Story tape/CD?
jig saw puzzle
crossword book
paint by numbers
a few years back I got mine a past and present book that contained photos of the local area, one shoot years back and another present day one taking from the same location for comparison and he loved it.

You might create for him a photo album with 100 or more pages, 81 of them to have pictures of his previous Christmases, and the last to be left empty for next Christmas pictures.
Does he drink? My granddad liked nothing better than a bottle of good whiskey!!.
Get a digita photo frame and steal some of his favorite family photos to load up. Some are cheap, but if you can afford one that plays music put that on as well so it is all up and ready to run on Christmas day. x
Make him up a food hamper of stuff you know he will like.
Best ever present for my elderly dad was a multi bird feeder. One that takes a water tray and fat balls and peanut sacks . He used to sit and watch for hours.
He might enjoy a good bottle of Port which he maybe couldn't afford to buy himself.
