Need to get my boy new trainers and he has outgrown Clarks but needs a narrow fitting. Puma look quite a narrow style - not sure if they are "cool" though.

Anyone know which brands would be worth a try?

How old is he?
Adidas can be a small fit (Length AND Width). Puma are an average fit, width-wise.

Hi Ummmm, he's 10 coming up 11 - his current ones are clarks 5.5 but toes are touching top so i guess he would be a 6 adult size.
Question Author
so maybe a size up in adidas would be about right then judge? At least I know where to start - trying to get information out of him about whether they fit or not is a bit of a trial. At least with clarks, the machine kind of did the job for you!
The only thing is, it's only the likes of Clarks that measure feet (I work in JJB Sports).

I normally tell people that adult size 6 in Nike would be a 7 in Adidas. We also sell 5.5 in kids sizes (again though, he may need size 6 Mens in Adidas).

Thanks Judge, I can never remember whether clarks measure quite big or not, so if he is a 6 in clarks now - which I guess he must be if the 5.5s are neat, would that make him a normal 6? or normal 5.5? very confusing. Other than clarks, the only other footwear he gets is walking boots which are always bought a size too large to allow for the thick socks.
It'll depend on what type of socks he wears aand how thick they are - I guess he won't be wearing the ones with his hiking boots. You want to try and find someone (In wherever you end up) who really knows the shoes. Check his toes at the end of the shoe and ask the opinion of the Assistant too (I do and it gives the customer peace of mind that they've mad the right choice).

A little bit of a gap is OK so he won't end up with blisters. Good luck.
I hate stating the obvious... :-|
Lacoste are quite narrowmx
Annie - is there a budget? New Balance do different widths - and would be quite "cool" - lol - but can be expensive IMO

That's okay judge - I am honestly not an idiot, but i've always played safe with the kids feet and got them fitted properly. I am sure you are very good at your job, but whenever I have been in a sports shop, I have always ended up with some young lad that couldn't give a toss. They have given me no confidence whatsoever and I've ended up going back to clarks. Younger son is very verbal but would probably say they fitted if he liked them, elder son says very little when in public so you are left guessing! I'd prefer to avoid adults shoes if I can given the increased cost. Kids shoes tax free is totally a farce when your kids have big feet!

I'll just have to give the sports shops a try though.

Thanks tinkerbell - that gives me another one to look out for.

Tony, clarks are around the £30-£35 mark so the NB ones are around the same it looks like for kids ones - adults obviously run a bit higher but there is a chance he might just catch into the last of the kids in some styles - there aren't many mens in a 6 anyway. Plenty of ladies which would probably be a good fit for him...........but I wouldn't get him ladies trainers, i'm not that cruel.
Especially the velcro ones annie, i have a few pairs myself for work and gym, plus theyre still cool.

Also re puma ones, they are in, last i checked my cousins were wearing the ones with the ferrari sign on? Theyre narrow too...... X
Question Author
velcro would be good tinkerbell - kids nowadays are too used to velcro so laces are a bit of a trial if you are in a hurry!
Oh! Ps......i know you will know this, but convers are right in just now and quite slim fitting, as are hi-tops......i soooo want a pair but im verging on looking stupid :0P
Got similar to these for work, last great i had them in plain black patent before, comfy as xx

Those are nice tinkerbell, but i'm not sure he'd like the pink! lol.

i know high tops are in, but he has a high instep so struggles to get things like that on and I don't like them wearing anything too flat - I don't think they look very comfy! Considering I used to run about barefoot most of the summer and wore plastic sandals or welly boots or cheap gutties and lived to tell the tale, I'm very fussy about making sure they have good shoes!
Yeah i understand why...gotta take care of yer plates of meat! Lol...well they come in white & red and all sorts of colours....really comfy aswell...i run up and down the ward and my feet are ok lol.....and i wear em to gym too ....converse are quite flat, ...the hi tops come in nike so mabye be comfy but not sure abt the high instep though!!

Oohh good luck anyhows xx
annie - re price - I was looking at some of the mens styles - lol
