baby present for a muslim friend

Hello

I want to get a small present for a friends baby (she hasnt had it yet so I dont know what it is). I don't know her that well, only through work. Is there anything I should avoid getting for her? She wears a long dress covering her clothes and a head covering if this helps? I don't want to get her something that will be useless eg clothes that she can't dress the baby in or anything.

I was just thinking the same Red. Surely the rules for dressing don't apply to new babies? I'm sure some lovely neutral baby grows would be very appreciated.

Hi beanmistress, when any of my friends have babies we usually buy clothes. I would avoid buying things with animals or people on as some Muslims may be offended by images of living things. There's a couple of sites here that might give you some ideas

Although thinking back to all my newphews and nieces being born, even though the parents didn't buy any clothes themselves, they still had so many that some never got worn.

Maybe you could just give her some vouchers for mothercare or somewhere and she can then chose something she needs now or get some new clothes in 6 months when people get bored of buying the baby presents.

You might try asking another Muslim friend - many cultures have their own conventions, and it could give offence if you give something unsuitable.

This is just my opinion but I would actually find it inappropriate to buy a t-shirt like that for someone if I am not Muslim myself.

Just out of interest Safiya, would there be any particular colours that should be avoided? I think that sleepsuits/baby gros sound fairly safe as they cover most of the body and babies don't need to have their heads covered do they?

I can't see as it matters what colour it is annie, but I do know some people who cover their babies heads and some who don't. Parents choice I guess.
