T J Hughes in Administration

Sad to hear that this well known and liked Retailer which was founded in Liverpool some 100 Years ago may go to the wall.
I feel sorry for all the Job losses which will result.
I always liked to shop there as they had a good variety of goods on sale from TV's, Household products to clothes etc.You name it they sold it more or less.
Any one else been a regular shopper there ?
London Road in Liverpool will never be the same again if they cease trading.

Hi Redman, I always go into TJ Hughes when I go to Birkenhead (going saturday btw) and was tempted to go into the Wrexham store last weekend but budget wouldn't allow it. ILike you say you could get most things from there and at a reasonable, if not cheap, price. It would be a shame to see them go under but my guess is that they would be bought out by someone else.

News broke on Radio Merseyside this morning about it, Lewis's Stores especially the one in Lime Street was another famous one which ceased trading. sad day really, just goes to show how bad things are in this Country at the moment !

Redman: wasn't tj's in two parts linked by an underpass? I think my parents thought it was a bit "down-market" and preferred Lewis's and GHLee (now John Lewis?). I saw a branch of tj's last year Bournemouth-way.

The one in London RoadLiverpool was split into 3 parts if I remember correctly, selling quite a large range of goods. One Shop sold just Shoes I think. Maybe a bit downmarket in some ways compared to the newer Retailers on the High Street.

some of their stuff was really good i.e.toiletries and face cream, hair stuff, household goods but their clothes were a bit naff, I use to vist one in Eastbourne whenever I went there and then we got one in Romford, cant say I was a big fan but always feel sorry for people who are going to loose their jobs.

They did struggle some 10 Years ago but were taken over by someone else and it picked up for a while. Alas it's struggling again !

However, it is/was handy in the same way Woolies was - cheap things you're not sure where to find!

We have one here...excellent for toiletries,and small appliances.Maybe if they just specialised in those...? The rest is rubbish.

If this would happen hope not ,but how do buyers stand with their garentee (okay spelt wrong but you know what I mean) issued with purchases.

Regarding Guarantees, the best thing is to contact nearest T J Hughes Store. Probably the Administrators will be able to give advice as well.

I have bought shirts, ties etc from there but never any other clothes that I can remember. Sylvia always used to buy perfume there - loads cheaper than Boots or The Perfume Shop (or whatever its called) and brollies - it always rained when we went to Birkenhead and she would forget her bloody brolly - strangely I can't find any in the house though.

Blacklers was another well known Liverpool store which is sadly no more.
It is now a large Wetherspoons Pub !
Owen Owen and G H Lee were other well liked Stores which have gone.
Maybe I should modernise and move on.....

We don't have a TJ Hughes or a Habitat - Primark has only been in town for about a year.

I am still in mourning for Woolies - they sold lots of household items - screws etc that are no long available without a trek to a retail park DIY store.

Bring back Woolies.
