what do you want to do with it? Olympus and Nikon are generally thought to be the best brands, but I'm a fan of Panasonic Lumix cameras myself.

Memory cards cost as much as a piece of string: the more photos they'll hold the more they cost. If you download them onto your PC regularly you can delete them from the card and reuse it.

Don't get too ecstatic over megapixels. Anything more than about 8 isn't really much use in this life.
Unfortunately camera technology is still jumping ahead a significant rate. Whatever you buy will be obsolete in 6 months or less.
that's a bit off-putting, HK. There may be something more advanced around in six months, and maybe it'll even be better. But what you get won't be obsolete, and the chances that you'll regret buying it or feel the need to replace it, are pretty slim.
Jno, I have a 16mp camera. Should I put it in my coffin?
Agree with pretty jno - stick to the major brands ...

... personally I love sony cameras - in your price bracket this is the leader :

Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

It will take sony's own memory stick cards, but also the cheaper SD cards - a 4gb card will hold hundreds of pictures - my favourite memory and bits and bobs shop is here

stick to sandisk/samsung cards and you won't go far wrong

zac, you could always adjust the picture size - take 8mp pictures, get twice as many of them on your memory card. Even that size would probably give you a decent print 2 feet long or so.

I see Nokia have just announced a 41 megapixel camera phone. Not sure what that's going to be good for. (Apart from phoning.)
Amazon are currently offering a Nikon Coolpix S3100 14MP camera for around 75 quid and also a sanDisk SDHC card - 8GB for £6.39

I have an old 2.1 mp finepix, the pictures can be enlarged to A4 size without any obvious pixelation, so if you are just taking snapshots almost anything now available will do. There have recently been some good recommendations here on AB, I suggest that you do a search here before moving on to google.
