Going to need one soon and it needs to be reasonably decent because of the cat hair but I can't afford to shell out for a brand new Dyson or Miele. There's a few on Ebay but even so they are still a chunk of money that I don't want to waste on something that's going to fail in a month. Is it worth the risk or should I just buy a cheaper vacuum brand new?
I am very wary of buying second hand expensive items on eBay. I have done it, sometimes with a good result, notably monitors. But at other times realising when the item comes, that it is more fit for the bin than to be sold. I opt not to buy expensive second hand items I can not examine beforehand any more.
You'd be better off looking for a trader with a rep to protect.
I wouldnt , i bought a stick vacuum cleaner off e bay ( seller was local to me so i picked it up) i wanted one just for the stairs as they are very light but suction was crap for getting the dog hairs off the stairs , do you know anyone with a catalogue you could get one from and pay weekly?
I think I'd rather go to a local shop that sold reconditioned ones then if it's no good you could take it back. If it's for cat hairs make sure it's a Miele.
i've bought a brand new vacuum off ebay but doubt i would buy a second hand one, how many people have a decent hoover in good working order spare to sell on ebay?
You can buy brand new quite cheaply now with out the need to 2 nd hand
Why do you think 2 nd hand vacuums are for sale? Because they are past their best
Try Freecycle before eBay
Search your area for shops that do reconditioned vacuums
I say never buy anything electrical from ebay, no matter what it is.
Can't you buy one with your credit card & pay it off monthly?
A second hand shop is a good idea tho coz you can test it before you buy.
i went to a car boot sale last summer and somebody was selling a second hand hoover and what made me laugh wa the fact that they hadn't even bothered emptying it! Someone actually bought it to!
Maybe I'll swerve Ebay for a while and see if I can find a refurbished one from a more reliable place.
I've got a rule, if I can't afford it I don't get it so that means nothing on credit cards. I've got myself in bother with credit cards in the past and now I'm sorted out I won't let myself make the same mistake again.
do you already have a dyson that is on its last legs?
they offer a repair service, mine blew the motor about 3 weeks after warranty ran out, cost about £60 engineer came at at set time replaced brushes, hose and the motor as well as giving it a good service. thought it was worth mentioning
Get a Henry but use one of the smaller brush heads that have stiff plastic 'bristles''they pick up cat /dog hair far better than the large carpet head .
A new Henry will come with a range of nozzels including the one I am talking about. A Miele is very good as well but a lot more expensive than a Henry.
We have a large black labrador who sheds hair all over the place but Henry is a match for him.
