What Is The Best Clothing Spot Remover?

Having not given thought to this for decades, I find myself searching for an old product that I used 30-40 years ago to remove spots from my clothing. I remember that it was in a sturdy clear glass bottle. Beneath the safety cap, there was what closely resembled a piece of grey carpeting that prevented the liquid from pouring out, but you could use to brush the stain with. As I recall, it worked fantastically. However, I remember that it smelled of spirits or dry-cleaning fluid. Does such a product still exist in this particular permutation? I've had a browse online and found a plethora of products, none of which appears to be as simply practical as what I used in the past. Am I looking in the wrong place? I'd like to keep a bottle at work and 1 at home. I find the occasional embarrassing moment when I UFO's (unidentified Food Objects), on my lapel or tie, or a smudge of unknown origins on my jumpers and I'd like to remove them post haste!
Anyone recall such a product? And most importantly, has anyone seen such a product lately, and what might it be called?

Dr Beckmann does a range of stain removers that work very well. We have tried the stain pen which is very good on fresh stains.

Thanks Chrisgel, I'm familiar with Beckwith and have some in my laundry room. But I didn't realise they had one I could discreetly use whilst wearing my clothes. There were times when stains on my tie were in vogue. I could simply go to a restaurant, hold up my tie, and say 'I'll have some of this, please.'

It's boring growing up! Uni was much more fun.

I seem to recall my mother having a product in a strong,small glass bottle called Thawpit??

Thawpit and Dabitoff were carbon tetrachloride based, the same as dry cleaners use. Its nasty stuff and no longer sold to the public.

KR2 spot remover, possibly. Again, like the others mentioned it's carbon tetra chloride based, so no longer available.

Thank you for all the helpful (and sometimes odd, Tilly?), answers. BHG, I discovered that K2R is still on the market and I ordered some yesterday. And most interesting tetrachloride can be purchased in litres and gallons, just not in a logical bottle of a few hundred mills...go figure. And crum, retro, that thawpit stuff is older than my nan! But alas, no longer available either....unless you work in a morgue!
So I shall keep my fingers crossed and revert to a Bib, as Tilly suggested, (I thought that's what my ties were for! Or so I can go back to a restaurant and hold the tie up and point to the stain, saying " I'll have some of that, please!"

So it seems we have resolved the great 'spot' conundrum of 2014. Thanbk you everyone!
