Hi all,

This is my first question on this site, so here it goes.

I am arranging a weekend away for my husbands 40th on 7th October.  It will also be our first wedding anniversary.  We are staying in Windermere and I am looking for something different to do on the Saturday as a surprise.  I have looked into the champagne hot air ballooning but this seems a bit more expensive that I am looking for and all the cruises on the lakes I have seen on the internet all seem a little 'too touristy' (if that is a word), they do not seem to be intimate, but I would not rule this out if I could find the right boat and cruise company.

I have only been to the Lakes twice in the past and haev trawelled the internet but everything is aimed for the tourist, I am looking for something that will be an experience never to forget.  I already have the luxury 4 poster bedroom with views booked.

I hope I have made myself clear, and I will seriously consider all options suggested.

Many thanks

Fantastic idea and first thing that springs to mind is 'how confident you will be leaving the hotel!' ;0)

Anyway, couple of things to bear in mind is that October is not going to be as busy as it is now and some of the companies you have seen may be willing to offer you something a little more personal.  Its worth dropping an email and see if they can help.  The way you have written it here is spot on and I am sure there will someone able to offer you something a little special.

given that the hotel seems to be in the luxury business, why not give them a ring and ask them for ideas? They should know the sort of things their guests want and will no doubt be happy to pass suggestions on.
its going to be dead at that time of year.i would go to wasdale for the day its stunning have a look at www.wasdaleweb.co.uk   the screes pub has the best lasagne i have ever had and the strands hotel has a wicked baileys bread and butter pudding yummy.how about climbing englands highest mountain ?check out the webcam on the site.PS DONT BUY A PIZZA IN WINDERMERE . TRY THE CHIPSHOP NEAR TO THE QUEENS PUB.for a night out try bowness nice little wine bar round the corner from vinigar jones chipshop....hope this was helpfull
The Ullswater Steamer is much quieter, not sure if it runs at that time of year though.  If it does you should drive to Glenridding, get on the steamer and get off at Howtown after sailing up and down the lake.  Take the footpath around the lake back towards Glenridding but make sure you have a super picnic with you.  October is a great month in the lakes, days are crisp and clear.  Zefferellis in Ambleside do a good deal for a meal (vegetarian and very tasty) and cinema ticket (reserved seats).
