Manchester Airport To Leeds On Crutches.

Hi. Hope someone can help. We're travelling from Ireland to Leeds for a wedding on July 18th, flying to Manchester. We'd intended to get the train then taxi to our destination in Lawnswood in Leeds but, unfortunately, in the meantime I've broken my ankle and am on crutches.

There's no problem with the flight - I've been in touch with Aer Lingus and they'll get me on and off the plane etc. but it's getting from Manchester Airport to Leeds that's the problem (the return journey is all sorted with lifts etc).

Anyone know a reliable and not too expensive taxi/transport service that might be good? I'm OK with the crutches indoors getting from settee to kitchen to loo and so on, but am very nervous about having to walk any distance outdoors (up kerbs etc.)

All suggestions welcome.

ps if you check with manchester airport can they not supply a wheelchair from when you get off the plane to the train station ?

Lots of the major train stations have wheelchairs and mobility buggies that can be borrowed .... Leeds and Manchester are very big stations why not check through national rail enquiries . This may be a much cheaper option. The staff are very helpful on the railway network. When you are first on crutches it is very worrying but I found (after a hip replacement that I got quite used to using them and could even get a bit speedy!

DrF., Thanks - that was the original plan, but my recollection of Manchester Airport/rail terminal is that it's not that crutch friendly...ditto Leeds City Station. An added complication is that my OH had a hernia op a month ago, so he's a bit hampered as well

Nodger i do understand as i have mobilty problems and have just used the local taxi firm to the docs and then back near me to the chemist

I'm so frustrated with the situation, and not being able to do the things I take for granted, My initial thought was, great, I can sit and read all day....but my concentration is shot. Still, thank the lord my disability is only temporary. Kinda puts things in perspective.

I've run a railway station and encountered many passengers on crutches and I really can't see that you should have any problems travelling by train.

If you've informed Aer Lingus of your problem, OCS staff (who run the assistance facilities at Manchester Airport) will take you in a wheelchair to Station Assistance Point 1, from where First TransPennine Express staff will take you, again in a wheelchair, to your train and help you on board. They should then phone through to Leeds to ensure that you're met there with a wheelchair to take you to your taxi.

Phone FTPE Assisted Travel (0800 107 2149, 0700-2200, 7 days per week)to give them notice of your requirements.

Just a quick follow up - I've just finished on the phone with a very helpful person at FTPE Assisted Travel and everything is booked and sorted out for our journey. It couldn't have been easier or more straightforward.
