If you stay with the same network provider there's no problem.

thanx if i had gone with my instincts then i was right all along but when someone says something it put doubt in my head
The problems come when people start switching companies, though these companies have said they've made it easier to switch.
Switching is a doddle, you just need to get a PAC code from your current network before terminating your contract or letting your PAYG lapse, then just give your new network the PAC code and they switch your existing number over. I've done it a few times and it really is simple and painless.
me too. you just look for sim only deals and get a PAC code as Hammer said, I am on my 6th phone now with the same number and over 3 providers.
You are legally entitled to swop service provider and keep your number. (It was always envisaged as a personal number anyway. Only practicalities mean an unused one will be reallocated.) Since it is a SIM only contract the handset is presumably yours so you can keep that also. It doesn't matter swopping from PAYG to PAYM or vice versa either.
