2 years ago I bought a Challenge de-humidifier from Argos - a simple on/off version with a good capacity, and about £130. You can get more sophisticated models, with more controls and humidistats etc, but mine works really well, and pulls out an amazing amount of water from my old stone cottage, which has very thick walls. I can never quite believe how much I pour out when I empty it, and always think: all that water would have been in my house somewhere!

Thank, you both for your help. Which recommends Meaco 20l low energy at £239.95 so now I'm torn between the two
I'd say there's definitely no need to spend £240 on a de-humidifier with a 20 litre capacity if it's just for domestic use in a normal-sized house. I also wouldn't cut corners and buy one of the ones priced about £40/50, as they're not powerful enough. As I said, my Challenge works really well, and makes a big difference.
