I recently bought a Carpet from a well known carpet retailer.  The price I paid was also for grips and underlay - which at the time was not known if it was needed.  The salesman (who I asked twice) said that I would get my money back if the grips and underlay weren't needed.  When the fitters came, they told me that the grips and underlay, were indeed, not needed.  When I returned to the shop to get my money back I was told I could only get a 'credit note' and not my money - which I was promised.  Anybody know my rights?  Thanks.

If you were told you have the right to return them and get a refund, then you are entitled to exactly that.

I would first try the manager of the branch, and if no joy, contact trading standards.

Also, if you paid for this on credit card (as opposed to debit or chage cards) you have protection through your card company.

Hope this helps

It's a clear breach of contract, and as oneeyedvic says, you should be protected.  Point out that you specifically asked about "money back", not credit refund.  Use the phrase "I relied upon the statement that I could get my money back, when entering into the contract to buy the carpet. This was clearly a misrepresentation designed to encourage me to enter into the contract."  Make this clear to them early on, and contact your CAB (Citizen's Advice) as soon as there's a problem.  Obviously if you're comfortable and happy to contact your solicitor, do that.  Only a lot of people want to save the bob or several and get free advice first! :-)
