Because they can. Because some people cannot be bothered to get a better price.

No such thing as 'Customer Loyalty' nowadays
They specialise in different types of motorist/cars - and are offering different discounts to get new business.

I had quotes from £200 to £3,000 - and eventually struck a deal with M&S for under £150.

The people quoting £3,000 simply weren't interested in covering a Q5 and quoted accordingly.
its the same as buying anything else

You're not getting ripped off.. You are requesting a service and they are offering the insurance at a given price. If you accept the given price ... why whinge.
If you are not happy, go onto Moneysupermarket or the like and request another quote. A number of insurance companies will give you various quotes and it's really up to you which one you accept. I cant imagine why you feel you are being ripped off ?

Last Thursday I got my annual renewal reminder from Direct Line ....
they wanted £272.00
Friday morning I used MS and received 39 quotations ranging from £151 upto £500+
I then phoned Direct Line and said "I had just been quoted a better price by a competitor and if they couldn't do something with the price, I wouldn't be renewing".
The operator asked what I was expecting to pay for the same cover that DL were offering ... I said at least £100 less.
How would £171 sound she said ... I went ahead and renewed and got the same cover they had previously offered me for £272.00

If you don't ask ... you wont get. Last year the AA quoted me £169 for breakdown cover, after refusing to pay and using the' RAC and top cash back' as a lever I ended up getting it for £50 from the AA

Don't pay it !

Here we go, "Whinge" I would have thought other motorist's have the same Issue, & I do look around, I do not have Loyalty with any Insurance Comp.
Buying insurance is no different from buying a TV, car, computer etc. Ever since the abolition of Retail Price Maintenance about 40 years ago, nothing has a price. You want a new TV, you shop around for the one that has the features you want at the price you want; then you buy it. Insurance is just the same.
You're not being ripped off if you don't lose any money.

They are just trying it on. Go somehere else or haggle.
The problem with a lot of insurance companies is they offer a better price but it's only if/when you claim you find out if it was a bargain or not.
I completely agree with vulcan...I never go for the lowest price. I want decent cover at a fair price with excellent service should the worst happen.
You only have to see the Which? customer satisfaction ratings to realise that the lowest premiums usually result in poor customer satisfaction (take Admiral as an example).

I did state "For the same cover"
The COVER provided may well be the same...but the RESULTS if you do make a claim can vary significantly.
Give Aviva a ring - you might be surprised that they are competitive and you may feel more confident using a reputable company.

Perhaps you should go compare before you buy!

Caveat Emptor, and all that!
I really can't understand where 'Thief' and 'ripping off' come into it. You are obviously searching the web so can see they are up front about their policies and how much they charge -you have the choice! Its not like they are sending you a quote by email or post, and saying that you have to take this quote and no others are available. Some companies are not interested in insuring certain types of driver or vehicle so will quote huge rates to put you off - if you are a middle aged driver like me, never had a claim, driving a small car, in a good postal code, then they are fighting over you and by contacting the insurers you can play one off against another.
i go through the same routine every year, car insurance, house insurance and the AA, i get the renewal then ring up saying im leaving for a better deal they then come up with a better quote and i purchase, getting a bit boring now.

To add, Quoted £400 from Direct Line, Quote from Allianz,£219, exact same policy cover. It pays to shop around & moan!!!!
We got a renewal form from Direct Line for say(can't remember exact price) £350. Went on line and the quote was £300. Rang them up and explained and was told to 'renew it online then'. How daft is that?

That's the company I am with & leaving Margo.
Just proves that it pays to shop around. I feel sorry for people who haven't got the facilities or know how to do it, and believe it or not there are still a few around.
