My grandson has a wood cube shape sorter. A one year old may be a little young to start putting shapes in by himself, but he can explore the shapes and cube.

For a first birthday, a rattle.
Something they can grow into, enjoy for a long time and can be expanded on as time goes by.
As Minty said. Brio train set.
We bought a basic one 23 years ago. Added to it as time went by. Four of our children enjoyed it. It's still in good condition and there are other cheaper brands that are compatible with it.
Started with a basic circular track, now it can look like British Rail!!

(Maybe that was a bad comparison).

I'm sure one day grandchildren will get a lot of enjoyment from it.

Many years ago I bought my best friends new baby something like this as a Christmas present – later at 3 years old, the child impressed nursery staff by correcting the spelling of their name on a coat peg. Once the child has become bored with the puzzle, it can be used as a name plate on a bedroom door.

I'd go for the wooden shape shorter. You might want to check the Melissa & Doug website as they specializes on wooden toys. I bough my son's wooden railway set from them few months ago.
