Would shoe polish do if it was allowed to soak in and then the residue cleaned off?

would depend on the type of shoe polish, sandy ....,one of the newer cream style wouldn't soak in as well as some of the older type ...if you cleaned leather shoes with it, it would be ok for your belt :))

It's Kiwi I use. I'll give it a try.
What you want is Saddle Soap. Used by horsey people tp clean and maintain harnesses and saddles.
I agree with saddle soap. Is this an old belt that you can now wear again, because you've lost weight, Sandy?

It is. I've also got lots of trousers I can fit into again, but think I'll give the flared ones to the charity shop. :-)
Good idea, Sandy.
And there was me thinking you were Ex Irish Guards. I use a combination of Kiwi and Bees wax.
Sandy -I use this to clean saddles and leather (and ites a uk link the other link was a north american site)

Togo if you have any flared crushed velvet trousers I'll have them -they go like 'hot cakes' in my shop - trumped only by kaftans -and all bought by under 20's usually.
Lol Retro....there's a branch of Age Concern in my town who take all the vintage stuff donated to all their shops...I went in a few months ago + one of the young volunteers was wearing a band of flowers, from Claire's prob ..and when I told them that I had actually worn flowers in my hair they were so shocked!

Better idea is to use saddle soap.

Retrocop, if I was going to blanco it I'd need no advice. My boots were never satisfactory despite long sessions of spit and Polish.
Bathsheba, somebody else can get a turn out of them. :-)
Togo, when crushed velvet loons were the thing I could only afford cheap denims.
My OH has just come in, and as he collects WW2 militaria, I asked him what would be best, and he said Lanolin, or Lanolin based products.

Retro do the kaftans smell of camel schizzen. If not they are fake.
Don't use boot polish if you intend to use the belt with light coloured trousers, however much you buff it some will still come off on the trousers.
