I saw a young couple pushing a shopping trolley around the aisles of Tescos yesterday. Both were wearing what looked like harem pants. Are they going to be the next big thing in fashion for young dedicated followers of trends?

You should have rubbed them and asked for your wish.

No. The last time I tried that all I got was a knuckle sandwich.
harem pants/lounge pants have been popular with men and women for a few years, all the high street brands sell them, especially patterned.
Never had Belfast down as a trend-setter, sandy. When i was there in the mid-late 70s, the youth of the day always appeared 6 months or so behind the times, dress-wise.
Sandy, according to various style bibles your locals have somewhat missed the boat if looking to lead a trend.
They're more likely to be styled by Oxfam or the Sall Ann.

Ken, you'll remember the 'tartan gangs', gangs of teenage thugs dressed as Bay City Rollers clones?

Douglas, there are some garments that find their way to charity shops that are only fit to the rag bag.
Question Author
Fit for the rag bag ^^^
Yes, sandy, those were the ones throwing stones (and other stuff!) at us. None of them wore jeans that actually covered their ankles:-)
I suppose that they would be quite comfy - once you'd gotten past the idea that your entire front carriage hadn't collapsed!

Hans, if these were available in a more restrained colour I might consider getting a pair.

The link helps. Wearing a pair might help if you were auditioning for a role in a pantomime.
I'd always assumed that they were worn to conceal some sort of 'surgical' appliance, incontinence bag or similar….
Well, Sandy, at least its a change from pajamas and dressing gowns....I see too much of that these days.

I was walking through Divis Flats one morning when I saw a foot patrol coming towards me. The last man was walking backwards, keeping an eye on the walkways, and he went @rse over tip on a bollard.
The patrol sargeant said, 'You can laugh', the other squaddies were, but I thought it wiser to keep a straight face.
Did the bollard get caught in his Harem Pants.?

The non sequitur was prompted by a mention of Belfast in the 70s.
Unhappy days.
Indeed Sandy. I recall travelling over to NI for my grandmother's funeral during that period and there were troops everywhere.

We picked up her caskett off the plane from Heathrow, at Aldergrove (?) and the cortège was stopped by Police and troops, on the way back to Kilkeel, where my relatives live.

Very unhappy days Sandy....much better now but still not perfect.

About 5 years ago, my brothers and I flew over to Belfast, for the funeral of my last remaining Auntie. We stayed for 3 days and in all that time, our cousins wouldn't let us "Welsh boys" go out without an escort, in case we wandered into the wrong bar or Pub by mistake ?
they weren't sporting a pair of these on their feet by any chance were they?
