Good evening Abers & a happy new year to you all

I am large in size & would like a dress that would cover and not stress my 'double belly'! I hate the way my stomach area looks - bumps & lumps.

is there a style of dress i could buy that skims off the stomach area rather then acentuating it? i dont normally wear dresses but have an occassion coming up where i need to.

tia - please be kind, this is a serious question

You could try an empire line dress, where the waistband is just under your bust and the skirt area gently flares out around your lower half.

Or wear a slimish dress, but not too tight, with Spanx type knickers and tights to create a smooth line.

thank you Cloverjo - is that what that style of dress is called 'Empire line' or should i look for something else where its as you dercribed - waistband is just under your bust and the skirt area gently flares out around your lower half

I`m not sure that an empire line dress is terribly flattering - one could end up looking a bit like a lampshade. Best to just get a good dress that isn`t too tight.
You could go for a tunic style like these from White Stuff. Nothing nipped in,the emphasis is interesting fabrics.
Easy to find them in ebay.

My suggestions are definitely day wear...you didn't specify whether the 'occasion' is formal, evening or day.
Diane von Furstenberg

Her dresses are very flattering.
Anna, empire line is what I described with the waistline under the bust etc., but I like some of the other suggestions you've had here.

I don't know how smart your occasion is, but I think the tunic suggestion from pastafreak with a pair of smart black trousers could be good, or look in Monsoon for something more dressy, if necessary.
Hi Anna look at empire line dresses. They usually have a waist just under the bustline then flare from there so are quite flattering especially if you don't like your tummy
Buy patterned dress, short & wear with leggings. These are inexpensive but very stulish. Order XXL coz chinese sizes are small. Ive bought some & very pleased with them. Delivery can take 1 month.

wow those are really stylish tamborine. I am a UK 14 what size would you recommend?
T, they look very nice, are they decent quality ?
I'm 14 & buy xxl for length & looseness. I bought a gorjus psycadelic neon color dress for nye party but aint posting pic here....dilaw has nicked it ;)
They machine wash well, mostly brushed cotton but some are knitted mix
this is just up my street.

I could see myself in this and a nice pair of trousers going to the races. What is the postage cost like?

sorry OP for going off topic.
Postage not bad considering dress cost, its just the wait. Ive never needed to return any orders.
Hi, a lot depends on how tall you are. E.g. I'm a size 16 (sort of, I'm sometimes a 14) but I'm 5'8", have a waist etc. and so don't look large. Right now there is an outfit on the r-hand side of the site that would be great for you -'Rotita', lime green and black. It may come up on your screen.

Go for a long, slim, slightly flared style with simple, geometric, strong colour contrasts which draw attention to the dress/outfit and not the wearer. Then go a bit mad with the hair, shoes and accessories. Hope this helps.

SherryBea i like the first 2 dresses on the links but its more the style/name of that look that i'm after so i know what to look/ask for but with the Abers help it looks like im getting there.

Thanks pasta but i dont think 'jersey' style material would do me any favours - quite the opposite, I'd like to buy some dresses for a variety of wear i.e. evening/day etc.... not to keen on the styles shown there but much appreciated hun.

Mazie - nothing off the shoulders, just not me. Thank you
I do tend to wear tunic tops with trousers already but fancy a change.

tamborine - they look pretty but believe you me when i say i have lumps & bumps and i'm a UK size 24 on top & 20 waist but my lumps & bumps need more then a size 20 if you know what i mean :-(

I definately need a material thats going to 'flatter/flow' rather then knitted, jersey or cotton? maybe i'm wrong?? I'm 5 foot 2"
