Balloon gas is not pure Helium as that is VERY expensive , it is a mixture of Helium with other gas.

You can get a similar, good value, greener effect by tying the balloon to a cow's mouth for a day or two before.

OG that is Methane .A different gas with different properties.
You could use it to cook your sausages if you could bottle it.
Chris, I agree Helium is too precious to be wasted in making balloons.
We could use Hydrogen, even lighter than Helium, but explosive!
