Does anyone have experience of this? How are they packed...do they arrive in reasonable condition? I am thinking specifically of houseplants, so some are already of a good size.

I've only bought cacti. They were securely wrapped in some sort of breathable wrapping. Arrived perfectly.

What sort of plant are you thinking? Type/shape etc
Ones I've bought were fine, even if courier left them in front garden. Weren't houseplants though, were for potting out on the patio. In boxes, loosely packed, as I recall. While ago now though. Probably varies from supplier to supplier.
I have bought loads off ebay and been very satisfied....they have either been small varieties though or rooted cutting size.
