... what a really lovely old fashioned Service they give! Reminded me of 'are you being served' Was guided to a section that was right for length of trousers, waited with us whilst trying on in the fitting room. Carried the item to the till and shook our hands after a lovely chat.

I agree. I've only used them a few times but it was a pleasure to do business with them. Nothing was too much trouble. Just like the old-fashioned bespoke tailors, long since gone from the High Street.

I'm in two minds about 'old fashioned service'. While I can find it pleasant at times (e.g. in Patisserie Valerie), I generally prefer 'functional efficiency' over people. For example, I'd rather queue for several minutes to use the self-service tills in a supermarket than go straight to a vacant staffed till. (I actually did that a couple of days ago in Asda).

Slaters in Manchester supply our golf club with blazers and jumpers. We have a good relationship with them..

You must be a polar opposite to me. I'd pass the self-service tills to wait in the queue. I don't wish to encourage a shopkeeper's desperate desire to reduce costs and up their bottom line to result in getting me to do their till service job, unpaid, for them. I think it a terrible imposition.

The sooner they can get entire chains of supermarkets, from shelf-stacking and cleaning up to actually selling goods, run by one guy sitting at a computer in Mumbai, the happier I'll be, O_G!

Slaters provide the uniforms and 6th form suits for my son's school. They are lovely a really nice service and the suits very reasonable.

We have, what sounds like, a similar mens' outfitters in Bedford. Mr T loves going there and spending a fortune but he does have some lovely clothes. :-)
I like going too. I am always treated nicely and they make me tea, whilst he's trying on different items.

Tilly, if it is the one I think you mean, it used to be in the centre of town. Apparently, one day, a customer walked in to the emporium and asked the floor walker, "How much are your wasps?" With some disdain, the response was, "We, sir are Bedfords' oldest established and most prestigious gentlemen's outfitters - why, on earth, would you think we sell wasps?" "Well," said the customer, "You have two in the window!"

They have a Ladies' department also but I find that a bit too much fuss.

It was a sad day when the Chester branch closed. Used to visit, if only for a look, every time I went to Chester. Still wear my very smart Magee suit at weddings or Christenings that I bought there some 6 years ago. They had the trousers taken up by an inch, in an hour, whilst I went for a pint. Say it again, a lovely suit.
