I find that my local Shell Station has a selection of presents for the discerning woman and is open pretty much 24/7 even at Christmas ...

You still have three days to go till Xmas Eve. All we ever bought on that day was bread and the turkey. Most of the bread was thrown away uneaten.

All shops will have been displaying their Xmas / New Year opening times for several weeks now. There are no 'rules' it is up to each shop to decide it's hours.

Don't hold your breath, small shops may close early especially if they are family businesses. I'd take the Argos route if I were you.

However, the Ms has had a poopy time recently, i wanted to treat her to a surprise santa sack

You'll have to be sharp. Most shops close early as public transport runs down in the early evening.
