Why don't more people use this facility in supermarkets ?

Why load stuff in a trolley , only to then unload it back into a conveyor belt , to then load it again in your bags ?

Is it the same in the supermarket you frequent ?

Are you a scan & go shopper ?

I've never even thought of using it, can't see the point.

I was rescanned in Waitrose a few weeks back....the first time in over TWO YEARS! I was surprised that, now, they scan only a few items rather than the whole load....took about 20 secs.
I'd never go to a manned till .....why queue when you don't have to?
Tuvok - I've never used that system, so can you please explain what you do after you've put your phone number in. Do you retrieve a zapper, or do you scan the barcodes with your phone?
In Tesco you resgister your Clubcard with the system, then scan your card which then releases a handset.

In Asda you register your email address and phone number, then enter your phone number to release a handset.

At the moment (in our Asda) you can only pay with a card, in Tesco its cash or card.

Checkout is easier in Tesco - you scan a barcode above the till. In Asda you scan the screen then present the handset to a scanner on the machine.
Too much faff!
Tuvok - it was just the logistics of the ASDA card I was asking about - we use Tesco and Sainsbury's, so I'm familiar with the system in general. On top of that I don't have a smart phone, so it was that part I was seeking clarification for. I can now think where the flaw might be in your "getting someone else to pay" trick.
Please change best answer Bazile, you can just pick another one - especially as mine is quite the opposite to what you think about scan and go :-)
When you enter your phone number, do you not get anything on your phone that you have to respond to to verify it's the right phone?
Cloverjo - where's the faff. You register once then each time you shop you pick up a handset, scan each item you pick up, packing as you go and then pay as you leave. Much less hastle than unloading a trolley onto the till and then trying to pack your bags as the items go through.
Where that falls down for me is I pack methodically with heavy items at the bottom (ie first on the till conveyor belt) but they are not the first items I come to in the store. All these answers haven't swayed me one bit.
I don't have a mobile.

In Asda your phone number is used to access the system. Tesco is easier.

Tesco also sell colour coded trolley bags that they intend you to use with scan as you shop eg. all your freezer stuff would go in 1 bag etc. I think it costs £30!
We don't want to do anybody out of a job. It's nice to be served by a human.
Tuvok - I see what you're getting at now. At Sainsbury's there is some system when you use a smart phone that your bank is debited automatically as you leave the shop (I don't know the details) - I thought that was the sort of system you were talking about. What you are suggesting is that you use someone's phone number to acquire a handset, use it as you shop and then sneak out of the shop without going through the cashpoints; ASDA will chase the owner of the phone for payment. It does sound flawed.
Can you slip items into your bag that you haven't scanned?
andres - yes, of course you can; it's called shoplifting.
Pardon my ignorance. Not a bad idea then seeing that shoplifters are not going to be prosecuted if they pinch less than two hundred pounds worth of stuff. !!
You don't need to go to the bother of getting a scanner if that's what you want to do - you just slip a few things in your bag instead of your trolley and go through the checkout as normal; there's no difference.

Prudie @1627
We have several shopping bags which is placed in the trolley

Tins / heavy stuff is placed in one as we pick up each item , where ever it is in the store

Fridge / freezer stuff goes in a separate bag

Fruit and veg in another bag .... etc etc

So you can still be methodical

Have I converted you now :-)

Read in the paper today that a 14 year old French boy got done for pricing a Playstation as £8 worth of fruit!
