Hospital Stays

Good Evening,

I’ve got my date for my Carpal Tunnel surgery in just under 2 weeks.

I’ve to be there by a given time (not been given yet) and I will have to wait until my surgery time which is ok. I’m not allowed people in with me as the unit is too small for that. So was planning to take my book and my iPod. It also says to take a dressing gown - but as I will be awake and the procedure is on my hand - is this necessary? I don’t even have one but I do have a ‘slanket’ which is cosy and covers everything.

I should be in and out same day but in the likely event they want to keep me...is there anything I should consider as I am terrible for over packing and to be fair I haven’t stayed in hospital in a long time.

If you are taking anything like an iPod and can't have anyone with you, you might want to check on if there is somewhere secure that it can be left while you go for your procedure.

Dressing gown wise, if they have you in a hospital gown for the procedure, they aren't always the most modest of things so preferably something which would cover you up where they may be any gaps.

overnight bag? sponge bag, towel, make-up, fresh knicks.
Slanket will be fine (I think it would be better than dressing-gown imo)

The dressing gown will provide you with warmth as you are having the procedure done. A slanket might just get in the way and have people tripping over it.

Go to Primark and get a dressing gown. If you think you might be kept in, take a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb/hairbrush, knickers and a bit of make-up, if you like. They should all fit in a toiletry bag. Good luck with it all, Queenie. I hope it goes well.

Eve - dad would be in the waiting room, he just wouldn’t be allowed in the same room as me while I wait. I apparently can sit and wait in the waiting room if I have a long wait. So he could take my stuff while I was away for my procedure.

Good thinking Alba...maybe you could sneak me out ;) since I will be on your side of the country.

Try not to over pack, just make sure you have a drink, soemthing to do like your book and ipod, phone and some tissues.

A very light overnight back just in case you need it, with make up remover, hairbrush, toothbrush and paste, face cream and the some oh so handy wet wipes!

I had this surgery done a few years ago at an orthopaedic hospital....and was surprised that I had to completely undress and don a hospital robe and pressure stockings as if I were having a major op!
The procedure was done in a proper operating-theatre so no "ordinary" clothes were allowed. I had to get there by 7am, the op happened at about 10 am, I had a nice lunch at 1pm and was discharged at 2.30pm. No problems at all....best of luck.

I had this one a few years ago, I was sent to a private clinic.

I didn't have to take anything with me, I just changed into a gown and left my clothes in a changing room.

It only took about half an hour, afterwards I had to rest in a cubicle with a cup of tea and three biscuits. Afterwards I got dressed and my husband came and took me home.
