Panic Buying (Again)

Maybe its a regional thing but I see *NO* evidence of it here in Stoke.
Shops full of toilet rolls, pasta, beans etc.
Where exactly is this panic buying going on?
Someone posted a link last night to my local paper, reporting on shop shortages. All well and good except...it isn't true!

I accept that some regions are experiencing shortages (going by what other ABers are reporting)
But is it really as bad as is been made out to be, and exacerbated by sensationalist reporting?

Think that the media have a lot to answer for if people really DO go short of anything.

And why would someone go to Cheltnam and then buy a multi-pack of 3ply toilet rolls and self isolate just in case?

It IS true in certain areas. And it's acute for some who can't go from shop to shop. The next village (of which our hamlet is part) is setting up a Community Friends type service to help those less mobile.

Maybe the people of Stoke don't like baked beans and pasta and don't wipe their bottoms.

I must be in a panic buying region, I was in my local Tesco earlier this afternoon the bog roll section was totally empty and many bare shelves in the tinned food section ( was the same last Friday also ).

Really cant wrap my head around all this panic buying stuff. Whether Im from Stoke or not is neither here nor there...I could be from Mars for what its worth... but what the media are reporting is crap.
Sure, some places are going without, but are the media reporting about places where there is plenty and no concern whatsover?

No toilet rolls in our local Sainsbury's. No painkillers, no hand gel, just a few bars of soap. Some freezers were empty too. My daughter tried to get some Calpol for the little one, but all that had gone too. She did eventually get some in co op.

nailt - A friend has rung me today, she lives in Talke and she is seriously panicking about the lack of toilet rolls.

Not sure where she has tried - can you advise where she should be going please?

I came back from holiday in the UAE today and we bought toilet rolls out there because we heard about all of the panic buying here. After posting pics of bog roll packs on our balcony, we stuffed them into our suitcases. The one time I wished I was rummaged by Customs, I wasn't. Stopped off at the supermarket on the way home and the shelves were bare. It's ridiculous. Boots out there are flogging hand sani but it doesn't have alcohol in it. The only place that does, is an American chain that sells little bottles of 68% ethanol. There is no panic at all in that part of the world (they have had Covid cases) but it will be interesting to see (mainly in Saudi) if they are willing to use hand sani containing alcohol.

No loo rolls in my local Asda today. No paracetamol or ibuprofen. No cleaning products at all. Low on tinned soup.

By contrast Tesco a couple of days ago was well-stocked.

Maybe it depends on the people in the area.

I would guess that because it is chemical alcohol rather than the drinking variety, Muslims would be allowed to use it.

I believe Muslims are allowed to break certain taboos if it is of assistance to them, rather than an indulgence, but I may not be correct there.

I`m not sure about that. They are not fond of alcohol in perfumes/aftershave which is why most of the fragrances made for that part of the world are oil based, not alcohol based.

I'm in the South London/Croydon area with a very high population and I have witnessed the large crowds in my local Tesco and Sainsbury's. No bog roll or pasta anywhere. All the longlife milk gone too.

Poundland earlier today Andy had sh 1 t loads of bog rolls in, Bought a couple myself. ;-)

It's happening in Rochdale, nailit. I know someone who works at a large supermarket, and customers are nearly coming to blows over hand sanitiser and packets of pasta. Some people are buying large quantities of bog rolls, then selling them on at inflated prices in their corner shops. People wouldn't do that, would they? Well, would they?
