Indian Leather - Smell

Hi, I've bought an expensive Indian leather holdall as a gift but now it's here the smell coming off it is awful - I had no idea that a different source for leather could have this issue. Anyone had success eliminating this vile stench, I can't possibly offer it up as it is. The seller did suggest placing it outside and letting the sun get at it - but I live in North East Scotland! Appreciate any advice.

but don't blame me if you try the vinegar method and find your bag ends up smelling like a chip shop ;-)

Anyone selling anything as 'expensive Indian leather' is having a laugh -it's cheap horrible leather -often goat or buffalo, hence the smell. If you can't return it (I would) then try cleaning it with a proprietary leather cleaner and placing a couple of drier conditioner sheets inside.

Paint it with neatsfoot oil. It's good for leather and has its own smell.

Neatsfoot il will darken the leather and it might go patchy. Remember those disgusting Indian Saddles that were around some years ago? They were like cardboard and went mushy in the rain.

I put mine out on the line on a windy day - inside out. That seemed to do it ...also a spritz of scent of talc helped

I've always used it, apg... it just makes it a lot more supple. May depend on the colour, I guess.

Use it up the street in Fraserburgh, take the edge off the fish scented air for the locals. :-)

Pixie I know what neat's-foot oil is but in this case I think it would be unsuitable as the OP wants something to take the smell away from cheap leather. Which is nigh on impossible considering she is probably dealing with goat or buffalo hide.

I would bin it, to be honest. I couldn't live with the constant smell of a dead animal.

My first thought is that it is badly treated goatskin ang nothing will improve the smell. Send it back or bin it
