Is that unless supermarkets have really put their thinking hats on this Christmas there will be tons more food heading for the ships than normal. You have less people have dinner /parties together. Office parties won't be happening, pubs not operating as normal Christmas or new year. The turkey producers must wonder what the hell to do with their stock. Whats you're thoughts?

^^ skips
Are lots of people going on cruises then?
here was me thinking it should have been shops
Literally tons of food is wasted at Christmas, it is a disgusting waste and I dont see it stopping now.

Surely if more people are at home then more Turkeys will be sold? People might want smaller ones but if you cant get it I am pretty sure large ones will be bought.
Or you could say that there are more people cooking at home because they can't go out to dinner so the supermarkets will be doing very well. Pubs and restaurants don`t source their ingredients from the supermarkets anyway.
sell the over stock at cost.. better then dumping

By what was on TV the other night it appears that people only want the crown of the turkey, the rest is wasted, when I say wasted, not eaten, but sent off for other uses, can't now remember what.

237sj, some do for smaller parties, especially if wholesalers are closed and they need fresh opposed to frozen.
It's not only turkey that will go to waste. When I was young my mother made me queue at the baker's on Christmas Eve as they could be shut for up to four days. None of the bread seemed to be eaten as there was so much else to eat and most, if not all of it, ended up in the bin or the bird table.
Yes, we have only had a crown for many years now. I purt my foot down after one appalling year when most of the rest of it was thrown in the bin. Far better for manufactures to deal with the rest of the carcass which can go to good use, they never throw anything away and usually even spray the bones to get what they can off. Bits not good enough for human consumption go in the dog food of course.

Yes I think its a case of the eyes bigger than the belly, there's way to much stuff and choice in front of our eyes when going into a supermarket.

OK mystic teacake, what have ships got to do with it?
Typo. He meant skips.
I expect that a lot of what's not sold will go to food banks and charities. There are a lot of schemes for distribution of excess.
did you not read as far as the first answer before leaping in, baldric?
There doesn't have to be a lot of waste with a turkey. Never fancied a crown as I find them dry. When we were young, my Mum would cook the turkey, then we would have it cold the next day. Then maybe some would be used in a salad (my aunty always used to make turkey rissoles at that point) and eventually the remains would be made into soup. Nowadays, people can't be bothered to do that. I have a friend who cooks a chicken and after the meal, bins the leftovers even though there is plenty of meat still left on it.
I remember those days. We dined off turkey, in one guise or another, for a fortnight. I can't stand the stuff now.
Anyone with good taste gives the crowns a miss. 'Twas a brilliant act of marketing, keep the best bits back to sell elsewhere and pushing the rest. (I note bacon rarely comes with rind these days too.)
I made turkeysoup with my leftovers last year - it's still in the freezer now
237 - do you not think people are more adventurous with food now? There are so many cooking programmes on it gives people ideas and what to do with left overs.

I've bought a turkey crown, only because I was asked to, and with the other meats I have I'll do a cold meat selection the next day with cheeses and chutneys, crusty bread, potato salad etc...
