I have a upcoming funeral that I will be attending but I am adamant that I don't want to wear a suit.

I'm very open to alternative suggestions. Maybe some nice trousers and a shirt would do?

That would be fine if you wear a nice jacket, too

Maybe a nice overcoat instead?
You would be surprised at how many people don't wear suits anymore.
I have been to countless funerals in the last 2 years and less than half the attendees don't wear suits or even smart casual.
Wear what you are comfortable with.
A black tie?
Of course that is ok. (My son hates suits and has only possessed one in his life, which was a light green. He didn't get married ina suit or wear a tie)

Just dress respectfully. Fortunately the days have gone where wearing black ties and sombre suits have gone.
Last funeral I went to I wore a suit but everyone else was brightly dressed at the request of the deceased. (I hadn't been told)
The last funeral we went to in February, my OH wore a black Crombie with dark grey trousers, white shirt and black tie. I wore a black tartan skirt with a black leather jacket, black boots. The daughter of the deceased remarked how smart we looked. She was immaculate but half the congregation looked as if they had dressed to go shopping in Tesco. In my opinion, dressing smartly for a funeral is a sign of respect for the deceased and their family. A suit is not required to dress smartly but please don't wear cargo pants and a puffa jacket or worse still a hoodie!
I forgot to say: 'Smart' does not have to be black, that's a personal choice.
Respect is the only essential.
Clean and tidy, don’t worry about what to wear, just be there to show your support for the nearest and dearest.
You are right Vagus. It's being there that counts regardless of what you wear - as long as you don't pul your hoody upovervtourvface
Up over your face! Some youngsters might only have hoodies and joggers.
incidenatally, where does one buy a suit nowadays? When my husband wanted a new, not crap/shiny/skinny suit for our daughter's funeral last year we had to make a special journey to another county to go to a traditional gentlemans outfitters
I've been to a funeral in jeans and leathers when my biker mate died. It was appropriate but I would usually dress smartly, not necessarily in a suit and tie. I would only wear black to funerals of close relatives and much loved friends.
M and S?
nah, they really are all crap in there and focussed at youngsters
How would you express respect for the deceased wearing shorts and flip flops to their funeral (unless asked to of course)? maybe I'm just old-fashioned but dressing smartly for a funeral shows respect. Thats just my opinion. When I die I'm not having one anyway, I'm getting cremated then going up in fireworks -and thats the truth its in my will and everyone can wear party clothes as appropriate.
Really bednobs? My local store seems to have some nice proper suits. Maybe it varies from store to store.
could be. We only have a small one in my town. I think he wanted an excuse for a new suit anyway - his "lucky" suit he bought for our wedding which was 20+ years ago
I disagree bednobs, M&S has styles to suit all ages and tastes, from youngsters with their skinny trousers and tight jackets to the more mature chap.
