Shops Closed But Pubs Stay Open.

I've just read that although a lot of shops/supermarkets are closing, the pubs can stay open on the day of the funeral.
I can't make any sense of that.

perhaps its so that people can watch on pub tv if they have one. other than that no idea. Not every shop will close, in the same way that often our little corner shops stay open on bank holidays....

I have somewhere in the back of my mind that someone didn't want the Queens coronation televised as it would be watched by people probably getting drunk (or something like that)
Seems ok for people to get drunk on the day of her funeral though!

my local doesn't tolerate drunks, they are often out before they get in that state. No pub has to put up with drunks.

No business is compelled to close. It's their choice. I don't see anything wrong with any shop or pub opening.

not in my local they don't, nor any pub i know, not even the ones i have worked in.

Maybe people who are by themselves and feel the need of company wiil go to a pub so as not to be alone

Naomi I don't see anything wrong with the shops opening, but the big supermarkets will be closing and yet the pubs can open.
Even schools will be closing which doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Barsel, I read that some supermarkets will be closing for four hours, but they can all stay open if they want to. Schools obviously don’t come into the same category.

the pub is a place where people gather for events like sports or news when the queen dies the school and supermarket is not you cant see a pub as a drunk house they are so much more than that they are at the heart of our communities apart from like the church they are the main congregation house

Indeed. Fullers has made this point when explaining why its pubs will remain open. Towards the bottom of this article:

Not only do they not have to put up with them, Emmie, it’s actually against the licencing laws to serve somebody who is drunk (a law probably more broken than any other to do with alcohol licensing).

It's their choice no one is forcing the shops to close. Of course the pubs will open ain't rocket is it?
