People on twitter praising him, how much they loved him in Carry On films, such a funny man.

Don't get how is ever on tv days, he was a vile man who paid a 15 year old boy for sex when he was 70.

How come he is not as loathed as others?

It was proven with Hawtrey when he had to be rescued from his burning house.
I can't make my mind up about Bramble although he made my skin crawl.

People's public persona in entertainment is very often markedly different from their off-stage personality.

Hatred was a lonely bitter alcoholic who resented never receiving the roles and rewards he was convinced his talent deserved.

He died after refusing to have his legs amputated to save his life, and his passing was not mourned.

The only quibble about the 15 year old prostitute is that some reports claim he set fire to the house because Hawtrey didn't pay him. There are lots of reports about Hawtrey refusing to pay the male prostitutes he used.

Maybe he's not loathed simply because there are people like me who have not heard his name mentioned or watched a Carry On film for years, he's been dead for years and I've never heard this story before. He always was a bit odd looking mind you.

I remember very well the morning after the fire and he made the front page. No wig, in his pyjamas walking out of his house with a fireman.

From what i could glean from the number who attended his funeral (as you say, just 9), this probably didn't have anything to do with the 'rent' boy' incident. The man disliked nearly everyone he met - apart from gay sailors, apparently - and refused to give autographs, ripping the autograph hunter's paper up instead. He didn't particularly get on with the rest of the Carry On crew and was, according to all reports, a very difficult person to like.
Wonder if those who did attend the funeral did so out of a sense of duty, rather than respect?
