I bought a Canon Pixma printer about two years ago - I very seldom printed and did buy the cheaper cartridge when I needed - however now the printer is not working at all.

It lights up etc and I do think my nephew could fix it.

However the price of genuine cartridges far far too expensive.

I am thinking of buying another printer and I am asking anybody to advise me of one that wouldn't be too expensive and their cartridges as well.    Thanks for any help

How many pages do you print in a week or month?

My library charges 10p per page, that might be an option for you if you have a convenient library. When my printer broke I simply copied the files I wanted to print to a USB flash drive.

yes - thanks Barry - I do have a printing shop at the bottom of the street and they could do that.

I guess buying a new printer wouldn't be worth it as I only print when needed - like lately it could be 2 or 3 months when I printed but I did like the facility

It is convenient but the problem with inkjet printers is that the cartridges can dry up if you don't use them often.  They can be reactivated but it's a hit and miss faff

I've had my Brother printer some years and it works very well with compatible cartridges but I leave it switched on. Every few days I hear it do something for a few seconds to keep the heads clean and the ink ok.

If you don't need a colour printer and can plug it in to your computer (not WiFi) a cheap laser printer is an option. The cartridge is expensive but they work out cheaper than inkjet per page. The cartridge won't dry out. This is an example. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1946417?clickPR=plp:5:11

Of course you can buy WiFi laser printers but they cost more

Have you tried the 'nozzle check' and 'clean printer heads' options ?

Which model is it , is it of the MB series?

I bought an Epson. They do a replacement cartridge by post deal (as required) for £1.99 per month.

That Epson deal isn't bad at £1.99 a month for 15 pages.  That would cost me £1.50 at the library with added inconvenience.  Printers start at £50.

If our current printer can  be fixed you might not need th expense of another printer. Once fixed you can still use compatible cartridges

As mentioned above it may just be the print heads need cleaning.

I have had one of these printers for a number of years now and find it quite good.  I always use compatible cartridges and they work well.  If I get any trouble with it I just delete the printer from the Laptop then put it back on again and it usually works.
