I bought a lovely short crochet type cardigan the other week and when I put it in wash at weekend it all came apart by the seam under the arm. Now I don't have the receipt but what are my chances on getting a replacement? as I love the top.

First of all, there's no harm in asking. Any decent shop will honour your request just as a gesture of goodwill, particularly if you're only swapping it & not asking for a refund.

More importantly though, you don't need the till receipt to return faulty goods. All you need to be able to do is to show you bought that item from that shop. For example, a printed bank statement could suffice. I have done this myself a couple of times.

Thanks Unfortunately I paid cash so the statement wouldnt help. I guess I might aswell try as I just want to swap it. They should be able to tell I didnt buy it that long ago so they should still have the same stock in the shop. and its obvious it has just come apart rather than been torn.
Hi 4getmenot, i would imagine it would depend which shop you bought it from. Some are better than others. Its worth a try but do it sooner rather than later so they still have them in. If they did flatly refuse, which i very much doubt they would, then you could always get some matching wool/cotton and just catch it up yourself.
D'oh! I never use cash so hadn't accounted for that scenario! Is this the only shop in town selling this item? If so, should make it a lot easier. You've probaly thought of this already but of course, it always helps if you take it back in one of their bags.
Question Author
Havent got their bad either. But I should think they still have it in stock. I;m gonna try tonight after work.
Question Author
Oops sorry meant havent got the bag either. and unfortunately unruliejulie I dont think even a qualified seamstress could mend this one.
well, if its that bad 4getmenot, then i don't see they have much choice but to exchange it. Are you good at making a fuss? If not, get someone else who is, to do it for you. My Mum-in-law is good at that and never fails to get things changed. Loud voice helps, should do the trick!
Question Author
I dont ever make too much of a fuss, as I always find I get things my own way if Im just very polite but argue my point well in the fact that it is faulty if washing it makes that much of a mess of it. But if the girl on counter says no then I will ask to see the manager. :-)
The policy with exchanging goods is that you don't need a receipt so as long as u aren't asking for your money back i reckon it should be ok. Yes, good manners and a nice smile always helps - i've always been lucky with returning things and such - Good Luck!
oh, now i sound awful, i meant only if they were funny and refused to exchange. I'm not one of those people,in fact, quite the opposite. Thats why my mum in law does it for me!
Did you follow the care label on the cardigan when washing it? If you did then the item is faulty, if you didn't then it's not the shops fault. Just a thought.

Well I went into shop yesterday firstly picking up the other two cardigans left on the shelf. These were also coming apart at the same seam under the arms so I could prove they were all faulty. I took them all up to counter and explained I didnt have my receipt but would like to exchange rather than money back. The girl behind the counter said I think we now have a policy where you need your receipt to return anythin. I said I dont think so these items are faulty I'm not asking for money back but I have a right to exchange please can I ee the manager (but all said in a very polite way) The manager came up and I explained and he said yep definately faulty if theres something else you want in the shop we'd be happy to exchange the item and we will get onto our retailers to tell them these items are not the usual standard quality. :-) I thanked them both for there help and got some new clothes :-)
I had to return two tops to Oasis that fell apart after a few weeks wear and a couple of washes. Each time I didn't ahve the receipt but each time they gave me an exchange and were absolutely fine. It depends on the shop probably. Big chains have less to lose and are desperate for customer loyalty so can afford to write off goods I guess. Everything else I've bought from there has been fine by the way- I think it was a design fault.

it depends on the shop policy of course, but i have had similar happen to me. i told them that i had washed the garment exactly according to the washing instructions - they swapped it straight away

Go in feeling strong, don't take no for an answer it is clearly faulty and its not your fault. Most shops are reasonable and will give you a refund :o)
