We are thinking of getting life jackets for our shih-tzus and have chated to people who take their dogs on boats. They say their dogs hate them and wont wear them. I am too scared they will have an accident and drown. Anyone had any experience of this please. ( life jackets not drowning)

I don't have experience of life jackets, but I do have experience of planning a day out in a boat with my dog, and going home after an hour of fishing him out every 5 minutes!!

Make wearing a life jacket fun - feed them in it, walk them in it, they'll get used to wearing it in time.

Thanks! doglady. It is something my husband has wanted to do for a long time and the opportunity has come up. Rather than leave them at home all the time, we thought it would be nice if they came also. Only if the settle down and enjoy it.

Yes...get them use to it..put it on..for a few seconds feed them HIGH value treat like chicken or hot dogs..small bits..then make it longer and longer, if he likes to run after toys or a ball, have him eventually have the jacket on doing this activity. I got my dog use to her LJ by using something lighter, like a towel and then wrapping it with a bungee cord, then something heavier, like a quilt folded up on her back, then to the backpack. So now she will wear the LJ no problem, she just looks at me like I have ruined her Diva status and all the dogs are gonna make fun of her...just like a teenager would....Good Luck.

Why don't you try a harness on a long line but don't know much about life jackets would you be able to find on wee enought to fit a Shih-tzus ?

Also have a bad joke my friend called Shih-tzue an Old English Sheep dog washed to hot !! Sorry

skyboat. One of mine is black and white just like a sheepdog. Yes you can get them to fit even a small yorkie although an armband would probably surfice. Only joking.

ok thats probably a great answer but i just thougt id mention i once saw a dog witha life jacket on that had a handle on its back so you can js go past in your boad and grab the handle to get you dog if u c what i mean....?
