I have received an email from paypal asking me to "get verified" by sending my bank account details. Is this safe to do? I only do a little buying, small amounts, with my credit card on paypal, I have never tried to sell anything, so I don't feel I need to set up bank funding as they suggest. Is it safe to send them my bank account details? Many thanks.

No No No..I buy bits and bobs on EBay but don't sell..and have often received these requests by email...be aware ..they are not from Ebay or paypal ..they are convincing but are a scam ...delete and ignore asap.

Paypal never ever do this. I very nearly fell prey to this when I first opened an account, but they do say any emails that appear to come from them should be deleted immediately.

hmm, yeah. I got one of those earlier.
Didn't even consider it as phishing, just dleted it cos I had no intention of getting verified with them.

Thanks everyone but - is there any such thing as becoming verified on paypal then? I logged on to paypal (NOT through the e-mail) and it does say that my status is unverified.

i suggest you email paypal and get verification from them again, as all the previous answers said, do not respond to those types of mails. paypal would not ask for such information; they would already have it from you previously opening the paypal account. be very careful. when in doubt don't take chance. when coming to your bank account and credit cards and stuff like these be very careful.

If you have already bought goods and received them using your PayPal account then you will have followed the correct procedure.

You need do nothing else. Please ignore these phishing scams.

look at the email adress which sends them. they are a giveaway that it is a scam. I got one the other day form a email adress calle [email protected] looked legitimate but like all the other answers say these are fake! Paypal dont do that. if you want to get verified you can go to http://www.paypal.co.uk/uk sign in and it will have infomation in there for you on how to get verified

and yes there is such a thing as being verified. It is done by going to their site yourself, never respond to any of those emails and never follow the links.

Now if I log into paypal (without following any links) and click on Get Verified, (left hand side) it prompts me to enter my bank details. Is this ok to do then? Thanks again for all the replies.

An email from Paypal will always have your real name at the top of the message. Spoof emails won't, 'cos they can't know it. Forward such emails to '[email protected]' - they have a whole team tracking down these people.

I've had several of these fake emails from PayPal too. I forwarded them to PayPal ( [email protected] ) as mentioned earlier and they confirmed that they had not been sent by them.

Hgrove - there's something wrong somewhere. Do you have a UK PayPal account that you've used once or on a few occasions?
Either way you will have an email address plus a password.
There is no way to access PayPal without these two things.


I've just been into my PayPal and this was the procedure - it will (or should) be the same for you.
1. Log in using your email address and password. This Password is only used for PayPal and nowhere else.
2. Select My Account.
3. You will see this on the left hand side.

Email:
Status: UK - Verified

to get verified, you have to give them your bank details and they take 2 tiny amounts from the bank account in question (like 8p), and you have to confirm what those amounts were so they can confirm it's your account. quite clever really.

i don't think you ever need to get verified but I think you do have a credit limit on your account without being so. I bought a fridge freezer and couldn't pay for it because it was too big an amount to do without being verified.

best email them to check. Or check the origin of the email by putting your cursor over the link - make sure it's from www.paypal.com and not some random site.

Many thanks for the replies. Yes, I have an account that I have used about a dozen times to buy (not yet to sell) which I can access with my e-mail and password. When I do so it shows that my status is unverified. I was just wondering if it is a good idea/safe to follow the procedure for verification as it involves setting up bank funding. I don't feel I need this as I find it easy to use my credit card for purchases. Thank you everyone for the very helpful replies which have clarified the situation for me.
