In very simple terms for a very simple person, can anyone tell me if/how i can transfer my old video tapes onto dvd without too much hassle. I know i wont get digital quality. I have a dvd player and a video recorder and pc with dvd player. Will i need a dvd writer?

Yes, the only way you can record a DVD is with a DVD writer! You could buy one for your PC, but by far the easiesr option would be to buy a DVD recorder (which is just like a VCR except that it records to DVD instead of tape). Then you can just play the tapes back from your VCR whilst recording to the DVD recorder. You can also of course use the DVD recorder for recording TV shows in the future.

Here are some DVD recorders:

Get a DVD recorder with a built in hard drive, that way you can easily transfer your videos to the HD and omit any bits you don't want, then when you're ready transfer from the HD to DVD. You can also use them to "pause" live TV etc, They're excellent and incredibly simple to use.
