U. N. Charter of Childrens Rights

I have just begun an HNC course in Social care. And as part of our studies (Child Protection Module), we have to identify the rights of children in relation to the above named charter and also explore the changing perceptions of childhood over time. I have downloaded from the internet a document , the 'Convention of the Rights of the Child' from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. What I would like to know is, are these two statements one and the same? Any other input would be gratefully received if any of you have completed a similar subject.

As far as I'm aware they are not the same document but may have similar clauses. Also check out Save the Children's website and other children's charities such as Barnardo's and NSPCC.

You may be interested in the idea that the concept of a lengthy childhood in terrms of a time of being under adult guidance and being free of adult responsibilities is comparatively modern (Victorian I think) Prior to that children began to be adults at 12 or 13 years old. Is childhood an adult construct?

Yea, Woofgang, the more reading on the subject I do, the more it is explained that 'childhood' is a relatively new concept. Before the start of the twentieth century, it would seem that once a child reached 5year+, they were deemed able enough to join the workforce, at least certainly in the poorer classes.
