A Controversial truth
There seems to be a lot of problems in the UK at the moment, I put this idea forward for all to attack. Terrorists, Immigrants, asylum seekers, peadophiles, paparatzi, and criminals are not 100% to blame.
The 'True Brit' only has to look in the mirror to see why his country is no longer the land of hope and glory.
1/3 of the population believe that its their right as Britons to claim benefit/allowances and work at the same time, as they dont get enough back from the government.
20% of city workers admit that they are paid too much for the work they actually do.
55% of home owners say their house price is over inflated (i think the rest are only saying the opposite cause its up for sale)
Middle aged people are buying 2nd homes abroad, whilst their children cant afford a 1 bedroom flat.
Crime does pay... most re-offenders admit that even prison life is easier than going straight.
Family business's are no longer important, its more important to save 3p per kilo on potatoes in Tescos.
Its unfashionable to use public transport, or buy a eco-friendly car.
Its a chore to seperate and recylce your rubbish.
Having a mobile phone with �100+ per month bill is now an absolute neccessity.
Because the council pays for a street cleaner, its alright to treat your home town like an ashtray.
I could go on and on...
Should we be responsible for our own actions, or do we vote for someone so we can blame them?

I dont claim benifits and work as well.
I am not a city worker and i dont get paid enough.
I have put a lot of blood and sweat into my home and the value should rise.
My parents cannot afford a second home because they have helped their kids all there lives.
I use public transport whenever i can and i recycle my rubbish.
I pay my taxes and do my best to live a normal life so why should i not attack the people who make my way of life more expensive and more dangerous.

I feel that a LOT of problems in this country are caused by the number of asylum seekers and immigrants, although there are many immigrants who are a credit to this country.
Having said that, the indiginous population are not perfect, but they never have been and it never has been a land of hope and glory.
There has always been paedophiles, it was was just never talked about. My wife's mother was "touched up" by an uncle about 70 years ago, but in those days people kept it to themselves (for all sorts of reasons).
In Victorian times we had kids working in factories, mothers getting drunk on Gin (mother's ruin), Opium dens, many people died in childhood, and mothers died during birth.
I think the biggest problem in this country TODAY is illegal drugs (Heroin, Crack etc).
The people who sell it will kill anyone who gets in their way and to them life is worthless, to the addict they will rob and mug anybody to get �20 for their next fix.
If I was able to fix one thing in this country it would be the drug problem, I would bring back hanging for drug pushers.
It is a scourge on our society.

We own our house and I do agree that they are over priced , we have never had a penny in benefits , have always worked , we do recycle as our council have done it for 15+ years so is now second nature . As we live in a small town we have small shops which are great , good example was wanted to buy 4 brass screws went to the local DIY , 28p later just what I wanted , not a mega pack , so goodbye to B&Q !!! Now we are in the EU all and sundry are here having free health treatment when there are waiting list for the the English , as i'm not British i'm English !!!! And proud of it , fly the flag for St .George !!!

I don't really understand what angle you're coming at with this. Do you dislike the idea that a third of people (allegedly) claim benefits, or do you dislike the idea that they don't get enough from the government?

That's a pretty sweeping assertion. Family businesses may be being squeezed out of the mainstream, but they're far from extinct (as a trip to just about any rural village market on a saturday will show)
Plus, Tescoes may be pushing people out, but guess why that is? People are shopping there. Why? Because it's cheap & affordable. That might seem evil and capitalistic, but when you consider the cheap products they provide for people on low incomes, you start to realise why it has such a large market. Nobody is forcing anybody to shop there.

I'm kind of thinking this might be a typo - it's very fashionable (due to the prevelance of the green issue) to use public transport/greeen vehicles.

The stats are questionable but Bob A Job's post is still more conscientious than the usual 'this country's going down the toilet - it makes me want to leave but I'd rather stay here moaning'...
Obviously our lives are much more comfortable than 65 years ago, but voices will still be complaining as loudly 65 years from now even if our lives are ten times easier.
The contented silent majority are less conspicuous in their complaining but, as you point out, this is not necessarily because they have a better perspective.
Perhaps the most selfish thing you can ever do is to bring children into an already overpopulated planet (though it's probably best not to write this on your friends' baby cards!). Yet as human beings people still consider it to be their right.

What surprises me about people in general is that the richer the country the more crime and general unhappiness there is. Human nature suggests to be near the bottom of the pile creates jealousy and a desire to look down on people of a lower standing or disposition. So the attack on down and outs, immigrants, social inferiors and social security scroungers. Rather than sympathise with these groups they put themselves on a pedestal as this adds to their self worth. Society would be more happier if the playing field was more level and the rich were more heavily taxed at 98% in the pound as happened until a few years ago.

Funnily enough I can only read this book in short bursts as it upsets me so much -it's a true story of life (existence) for the poor at the beginning of the last century .

I''ll have a look at the book, thanks for mentioning it. But one thing I have to point out is that the poor were richer than they were beforehand - average industrial wages were well over twice what they were in agriculture (the area where the bulk of people were employed throughout the C19)

Kromovaracum I don't think you'll believe that the city poor were better off than those on the land (and I'm not saying country folk were well-off ) after reading this book .We are talking about abject poverty here and it breaks your heart to be reminded of it .
I could tell you about life in the Thirties onwards and it wasn't all roses I can tell you .I do hope you will read that book and I also wish a lot more people on here would do so .
