Hi everyone
I have dead straight hair. Any recommendations for the best method of putting a curl in it from time to time without ruining the condition. ie curling tongs, heated rollers .. etc. Also the best lotion to use on the hair to protect it. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

well, the most gentle method without heat is to use bendy foam rollers, put them in while your hair is damp, then go to bed with them in if you can.

otherwise a ceramic curling tong is your best bet. As long as you don't go overboard and do it every day your hair should suffer minimal damage.

I use Toni & Guy heat protection spray (which i buy from Boots and is on offer at the mo) to minimise the damage caused, and also give my hair an intensive conditioner once a week.

hope this helps.

Thanks very much for that, that's very helpful. I don't suppose you can recommend a good brand of ceramic curling tong to go for can you?

what sort of curls do you want. You could always try ragging that would leave your hair totally undamaged. If you want spirally curls its ideal you can pick the size and seperate them once you have done it.

If they are the sort of curl you are after, Ill bother with an explanation after.

Hi again - yes I do know about ragging (show's how old I am), I think I'll probably buy a curling tong, it's just quicker to be honest. It's just a question of finding a good one. Thanks for your reply though, much appreciated.
well, my curling iron is a Babyliss total freedom one which is cordless and ceramic. it has quite a big barrel for creating quite loose looking curls, as my hair has some natural wave of its own.

I know Carmenhair have a 3 pce styling kit which has a normal barrel curling tong, a much thinner cone shaped head with a thrad round the outside for creating tight spiral curls, and a crimping head, one of my friends has one, and she says its very good.
Ill just clear up that Im not really very old, lol
What a useful thread. I've been wanting to try out some curling tongs too, but never knew anybody who could recommend them. Thanks! x
Less damaging I'd suggest rollers, but i use curling tongs and my hair is bleached, and it's still ok. Any heat to your hair is damaging anyway, it's only a concern if you can really tell it's damaged or it feels dry and is snapping.
