It was a family tradition, everyone had to stir it and make a wish.
One year my mum noticed a sizeable chunk [about the size of an adult's front tooth] missing from the wooden spoon. This was after she'd filled about 10 bowls. As the mixture had whole almonds in it, it was very difficult to find it. After spending about four hours searching for it she gave up.
Dad came home from work, she relayed the tale explaining dinner would be late etc. My Dad replied [in a I didn't engage my brain before speaking way] - "Oh I saw that bit floating in the washing up bowl last night didn't I tell you?" How he didn't get brained I'll never know!
